Mural Description
Painted during the Belltown Mural Festival 2026.
The Barnes Mural at the historic Barnes Building is 7,000 square feet. Five artists worked on it over the course of 2.5 weeks.
This mural is a celebration of Belltown: on one wall it tells more than a century of history and commemorates the different eras. It contains a lot of information!
It was intentionally painted by multiple artists, who have all done other murals in Belltown, so that the messaging would read like a mural created by the Belltown community for the Belltown community to reflect the Belltown community.
The mural consists of six different parts.
The upper part is done in black and white, and recounts the start of Belltown. Central to that is the historic act that created Belltown: removal of the natural bluff in what is now the center of Belltown by sluicing it down with water cannon. This flattened the area and created the waterfront.
Represented in this old historical view are a couple of iconic aspects of that era: the house whose owners refused to sell remaining atop one of the bluffs and some historic structures in the background that no longer exist were added in ghost-like fashion.
The five colored columns in the lower part of the mural tell the progressive story of Belltown’s history after it was created above. The sections are:
- The Film Era
- The Jazz Era
- The World’s Fair (1962)
- The Grunge music era
- Contemporary Belltown
It reminds us that every street has a history, that every neighborhood is built on layers of stories, and every generation leaves its mark.
So one reads the mural from the black and white top representing long past history through to the colorful bottom as a history of Belltown in one place.
